Authentic oud oil — distilled from agarwood — is one of the most expensive and distinctive raw materials in modern perfumery. A few drops can anchor an entire composition. This guide is for independent perfumers, niche fragrance houses, and brand developers who want to use real agarwood in their formulations. We cover grades, distillation, blending notes, sourcing, and the practical differences between Chinese Kyara, Vietnamese, and Cambodian oud oils.

Why Oud Matters in Perfumery
Oud oil is the most expensive natural perfumery ingredient in routine use, by a significant margin. It also behaves differently from any other material: it functions as a base note, a fixative, and a top note simultaneously. A composition with even 1% oud will have a longer dry-down and a more distinctive signature than the same composition without it.
The "oud note" that appears in many Western niche fragrances is usually a combination of:
- A small amount of natural oud oil (often 0.5–5% of the concentrate)
- Synthetic oud accords (Cashmeran, Iso E Super, Georgywood, and other captive bases) to extend and round the note
- Supporting base notes (sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver) to fill out the composition
Fully natural oud-forward fragrances, especially attars, typically use 10–30% oud oil in the concentrate. The highest-grade attars (often sold in the Gulf) may be 100% oud with no dilution.
Grades and What They Mean for the Perfumery
The grade of the wood you distill determines the quality — and the cost — of the resulting oil. The table below maps the four FOREZA grades to typical oud oil characteristics and uses.

How Oud Oil Is Distilled
Commercial oud oil is produced by hydro-distillation or steam-distillation in copper stills. The process is slow — typically 10–20 days per batch — and the yield is low. For Sinking-grade Kyara, expect 0.1–0.3% yield by weight: 100 kg of wood produces 100–300 ml of oil. For lower grades, the yield can be 0.5–1%.
There are three main distillation methods.
Method 1: Hydro-Distillation (Traditional)
The wood is submerged in water and heated in a sealed copper still for 10–20 days. The water-oud mixture condenses and separates naturally. The resulting oil has the most "complete" aromatic profile but takes the longest. This is the traditional method used in the Gulf and Southeast Asia for centuries.
Method 2: Steam Distillation (Modern)
Steam is passed through the wood in a chamber, then condensed. The process is faster (3–7 days) and the oil is more concentrated. The aromatic profile is slightly less complex than hydro-distillation. This is the method used by most modern commercial producers.
Method 3: CO2 Extraction (Specialty)
Supercritical CO2 is used to extract the oil at lower temperatures, preserving more of the delicate top notes. The resulting oil is called "CO2 select" and is prized for its bright, full-spectrum aroma. It is more expensive than hydro or steam distillation but is becoming the preferred choice for high-end niche perfumery.

How Different Origins Affect the Oil
Each Aquilaria species and origin produces a chemically distinct oil. A perfumer who has worked with both Chinese and Vietnamese oud will notice the difference immediately.

Blending Notes: What Pairs with Oud
Oud is unusually versatile in a composition because it behaves as both base and top note. Three pairing families that work well with authentic Chinese Kyara oil.
Family 1: Wood + Resin
Sandalwood (especially Mysore), cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh. Classic oud-sandalwood compositions are the foundation of the attar tradition. The sandalwood softens the oud's edges and adds a creamy warmth; the frankincense brightens the top notes.
Family 2: Floral + Spice
Rose (especially Ta'if or Damascus), saffron, cardamom, pink pepper. The floral-spice combination is the foundation of modern niche oud fragrances. Rose and oud is one of the most enduring pairings in Middle Eastern perfumery.
Family 3: Amber + Musk
Amber (labdanum + benzoin + vanilla), white musk, animalic notes (civet, castoreum, ambergris tincture). These add warmth, depth, and longevity. The "oud amber" composition is a Western niche classic.
Sourcing for Perfumery: The Practical Checklist
For perfumers and brand developers, the sourcing checklist is slightly different from a retail buyer's.
- Get a GC-MS report. This is the chemical fingerprint of the oil and is the single most reliable authentication tool. A serious supplier will provide one per batch.
- Order a small distillation sample first. 100 g of wood distilled in a lab gives you enough oil to evaluate. This protects you from committing to a large wood purchase for an unknown profile.

- Build a relationship with the workshop. Repeat orders from the same workshop, same species, same region, give you a consistent profile for your compositions. This is the difference between a one-off batch and a true signature.
