Fire and lightning injury

Fire drilling (huo luo)
A farmer heats an iron rod until it glows, then presses it straight into the trunk, burning a clean hole through the bark and into the wood. The combination of physical wound and heat injury reliably triggers resin formation around each hole.
Smoke and chemical induction
Other methods pump smoke or induce fungal agents into drilled channels, aiming to spread the defense response deeper into the trunk than a plain hole would.
The result, one year later
Return to a drilled trunk after a year and the difference is visible without cutting anything: each hole is ringed with dark, resin-stained wood. What happens over the following years determines whether the material reaches saleable grade.

But well-managed plantation material that has been induced early and left to mature for many years can reach genuinely high grades. What ruins quality is shortening the wait: resin harvested too soon is thin, light-colored, and weakly fragrant, no matter how the wound was made.
