When the global agarwood trade describes its highest-quality material, it usually mentions a country or a region: Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, or "the Middle East." For Chinese Kyara — the multi-layered, meditative, collector-grade agarwood — the specific name is Guanzhu. A small town in southern Guangdong, Guanzhu has been the historical heart of Chinese agarwood cultivation, grading, and trade for more than 700 years. This Pillar Page is the central reference for everything related to Guanzhu — its geography, its history, its craft, and how to verify that a piece of agarwood is actually from this origin.

TL;DR

  • Guanzhu Town is in Dianbai District, Maoming City, Guangdong, China — the historical "Capital of Chinese Agarwood" for 700+ years.
  • Three geographic features drive the exceptional quality: subtropical microclimate, mineral-rich laterite soil, coastal hill terrain.
  • The native species is Aquilaria sinensis, distinct from Vietnamese A. crassna and Indonesian A. malaccensis.
  • Single-origin "Guanzhu" agarwood commands a premium in the collector market because of provenance value, not just chemistry.
  • Every FOREZA piece is traceable to a specific Guanzhu batch number, recorded in the Certificate of Authenticity.

Single-Origin

Guanzhu Town, Dianbai District, Maoming City, Guangdong, China — the historical "Capital of Chinese Agarwood." Every FOREZA piece is traceable to this origin.

Not Vietnam. Not Indonesia. Not Hainan. 100% authentic Guanzhu agarwood.

1. Where is Guanzhu?

Guanzhu (观珠, "watching pearls" in Chinese, named for the resin droplets that bead on the surface of freshly cut agarwood) is a small town on the southern coast of Guangdong province. It is in the Dianbai District of Maoming City, roughly 350 km southwest of Guangzhou and 200 km west of Hong Kong.

The town sits on the South China Sea coast, with cultivated Aquilaria sinensis groves in the hills 50–400 m above sea level. The town has approximately 130,000 residents, of whom a significant minority are employed in the agarwood trade in some capacity — cultivation, inoculation, harvesting, grading, processing, or export.

Key Distances

  • From Guangzhou: ~350 km southwest (4–5 hours by car)
  • From Hong Kong: ~200 km west (3–4 hours by car)
  • From Shenzhen: ~280 km west (3.5–4.5 hours by car)
  • From Macau: ~270 km west (3.5–4.5 hours by car)
  • From Hainan Island: ~250 km south (across the Qiongzhou Strait)

For the broader Chinese agarwood geography, see Agarwood Origins Explained in the Education Pillar.

2. The Geography: Why Guanzhu, Not Somewhere Else

Three geographic features combine to make Guanzhu an exceptional location for Aquilaria sinensis.

2.1 Subtropical Microclimate

Average annual temperature 22–24 °C, humidity 78–85%, monsoon-driven rainfall concentrated in the warm months (April–September). A. sinensis thrives in this exact climatic band. Trees grown outside this band — whether further north (Hunan, Jiangxi) or further south (Indonesia, Malaysia) — produce different resin profiles and different aromatic characteristics.

2.2 Mineral-Rich Laterite Soil

Slightly acidic, well-drained laterite soil with high iron and aluminum content, plus trace elements that influence the resin profile of mature wood. The specific mineral composition of Guanzhu's hills is not easily replicated — and it is one of the most underappreciated reasons for the distinctive Guanzhu aroma.

2.3 Coastal Hill Terrain

Rolling terrain 50–400 m above sea level, with varied sun exposure and wind protection across short distances. This produces a wider range of resin densities within a single harvest batch — some blocks from the same harvest will be Sinking-grade, others Semi-Sinking, others standard. The variety is part of the appeal for buyers who want to explore the full grade spectrum.

Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia each have their own native Aquilaria species and resin profiles, but the combination of these three factors at Guanzhu is not easily replicated. See Where Does Kynam Come From? for the global origin comparison.

3. The Species: Aquilaria sinensis

All agarwood comes from trees in the genus Aquilaria, in the family Thymelaeaceae. Of the 21 recognized species, fewer than 10 produce commercially significant resin. The species used in Guanzhu is Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg — a small evergreen tree native to southern China and northern Vietnam.

Species Native Range Typical Aroma Profile
Aquilaria sinensis Southern China (especially Guanzhu, Maoming); Hainan; northern Vietnam Sweet honey → cooling menthol → deep wood. Multi-layered, meditative.
A. crassna Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand Sharper, more medicinal, often fruit-forward in the top notes.
A. malaccensis Indonesia, Malaysia Sweeter, often described as "fruity" or "honey-toned."
A. filaria Philippines, Borneo Lighter aroma, more cedar-like. Less commonly used in premium products.

A. sinensis is botanically and chemically distinct. The multi-layered aroma — sweet honey → cooling menthol → deep wood — is most clearly expressed in material from Guanzhu, where the specific growing conditions, the species, and the multi-generational craft tradition combine.

4. 700 Years of History

Agarwood from Guanzhu has been documented in Chinese trade records since at least the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). The town appears in 14th-century trade records as a waypoint on the maritime silk road, where Chinese agarwood was exchanged for frankincense, myrrh, and other resins from the Arab world.

Period Agarwood in Guanzhu
Song Dynasty (960–1279) First documented cultivation of Aquilaria sinensis in the region. Agarwood reserved for imperial incense ceremonies and Buddhist monastic use.
Ming & Qing (1368–1912) Guanzhu becomes the primary Chinese source of premium agarwood for export. Local families develop multi-generational grading expertise passed from master to apprentice.
Late Qing & Republic (1880s–1949) Trade disruptions reduce large-scale export, but domestic incense culture preserves the craft. The town's Master Graders continue training apprentices.
Modern Era (1978–present) Reform and opening-up brings international demand. Guanzhu agarwood enters the global market, first via Hong Kong traders, then via direct-to-consumer channels. FOREZA is among the first brands to ship DTC from the workshop itself.

Some of the families still working in agarwood in Guanzhu today can trace their lineage in the trade back 5–7 generations. The long history is part of why Guanzhu's Master Graders can identify subtle grade differences that a newer producer might miss. For the full cultural arc, see The History of Kyara: From Ancient Emperors to Modern Collectors.

5. The Craft: How Guanzhu Agarwood Is Made

Unlike wild agarwood — which forms when a tree is injured naturally and produces resin slowly over decades — most modern agarwood is produced through controlled inoculation. This is the standard practice at Guanzhu and is fully consistent with CITES Appendix II sustainability requirements.

Step 1: Tree Cultivation

Aquilaria sinensis trees are cultivated in the hills around Guanzhu for 7–10 years before inoculation. During this period, the trees develop their heartwood structure but produce no significant resin.

Step 2: Inoculation

The trees are inoculated with a specific fungal strain (often Phaeoacremonium parasitica or related species) using small drilled holes or controlled bark wounds. The fungus triggers the tree's natural defense response, which causes the heartwood to begin producing oleoresin over the next 3–5 years. The tree remains alive throughout.

Step 3: Harvest

After 3–5 years of resin formation, the trees are harvested and the resin-infused heartwood is separated from the surrounding sapwood. The Master Grader examines each block for resin distribution, density, and aroma profile to determine the grade.

Step 4: Grading and Water Test

Each block is graded into one of the four official tiers. Sinking-grade pieces are tested in water to confirm immediate submergence. The grade is recorded by batch number and never upgraded post-hoc.

Step 5: Hand Cutting and Packaging

Selected blocks are cut by hand into chips, slices, or granules. The pieces are sealed in moisture-controlled cotton pouches with a unique batch number, then matched with a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity. The package moves to the shipping area, where it is dispatched in a discrete outer carton via DHL, FedEx, or UPS.

6. The Aroma Profile of Guanzhu Kyara

Of all the Aquilaria origins, Guanzhu is the one most associated with a specific multi-layered aroma: sweet honey → cooling menthol → deep wood. This is the aroma most collectors and perfumers mean when they say "Chinese Kyara."

The signature compounds responsible include:

  • Benzylacetone — contributes the sweet honey top note.
  • Agarofurans — a class of compounds unique to Aquilaria resin, responsible for the cooling menthol character.
  • Sesquiterpenes — large molecules that produce the deep, woody base note.
  • Jinkoh-eremol and jinkohol — give Guanzhu Kyara its distinctive character that is chemically distinguishable from Vietnamese or Cambodian material.

The full comparison with Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Indonesian profiles is in 20 Common Agarwood Varieties. The chemistry behind the room-temperature aroma is in Why Does Kynam Smell at Room Temperature?.

7. Inside the FOREZA Workshop

The FOREZA workshop is inside Guanzhu Town, a short drive from the cultivated hills where the Aquilaria sinensis trees are grown and inoculated. Every piece of FOREZA Kyara passes through four stations before it is signed off for shipping.

7.1 The Master Grader

Grading is not a checklist; it is a skill learned over years of apprenticeship. Our grading practice follows the four-tier system defined in Four Styles of Agarwood. A piece is never upgraded after grading. If a piece that was thought to be Sinking-grade floats during the water test, it is downgraded to Chips and shipped in a different packaging tier.

7.2 The Workshop Visit

Verified B2B partners may visit the workshop by appointment. A typical visit includes:

  • Walkthrough of the four production stations (raw material, cutting, water test, packaging)
  • Meeting with the Master Grader to discuss specifications for your first production run
  • Tasting/grading session with sample lots from current inventory
  • Discussion of CITES documentation, logistics, and pricing

To schedule a visit, submit a B2B inquiry at /pages/wholesale-b2b.

8. How to Verify Single-Origin Guanzhu

Three practical checks, in order of reliability.

8.1 The Certificate of Origin (Strongest)

The Certificate of Authenticity must state a specific town, not a country or region. The full address on a FOREZA certificate is: Guanzhu Town, Dianbai District, Maoming City, Guangdong, China. A certificate that says "China" or "Asia" or "Guanzhu region" is not specific enough. See Certificate of Authenticity for the six required fields.

8.2 The Batch Number Lookup

Every FOREZA piece has a unique batch number in the format GZ-YYYY-XXXX. Email us at zhangxiaobao217@gmail.com with the batch number from your certificate, and we will confirm the production date, the wood source, and the Master Grader's name. This is a free service available to anyone who has purchased a FOREZA piece.

8.3 The Aroma Profile Check

Genuine Guanzhu Kyara has a recognizably multi-layered aroma. Aroma is not a definitive test (a very skilled fraudster could fake a similar profile), but a single-note or chemical-smelling aroma is a strong negative signal. See Kyara vs Oud and the aroma test in Grading & Authenticity.

9. Why Origin Matters (3 Reasons)

Two pieces of agarwood with the same grade and weight can have very different prices, depending on where they came from. Origin matters for three reasons.

9.1 Aroma Profile

Each origin has a distinct chemical fingerprint. A. sinensis from Guanzhu is recognizably different from A. crassna from Vietnam or A. malaccensis from Indonesia. Connoisseurs will pay a premium for the specific profile they prefer.

9.2 Resin Density Standards

The same grade label (e.g. "Sinking-grade") can mean different things from different origins. The strictest grading standards are typically applied in Guanzhu and a few other historic centers. A "Sinking-grade" label from Guanzhu generally corresponds to a higher density than the same label from a less-experienced producer.

9.3 Cultural and Historical Value

Well-documented historical origin adds provenance value, similar to wine terroir. A piece with a clear certificate of origin from Guanzhu is more valuable on the collector's market than an undated piece of the same grade.

10. FAQ

Is Guanzhu the only source of Chinese Kyara?

No. Other regions in China — Hainan, Yunnan, parts of Fujian — also produce agarwood. But Guanzhu is the most historically significant source and the one most collectors associate with the Chinese Kyara profile. The other origins produce distinct profiles.

Is Hainan agarwood the same as Guanzhu?

No. Hainan is a separate island province with its own agarwood history and slightly different growing conditions. Hainan agarwood is real and high-quality, but it is not Guanzhu. FOREZA only ships Guanzhu-origin material.

How can I visit the workshop?

Verified B2B partners may visit by appointment. Submit a B2B inquiry at /pages/wholesale-b2b. We do not currently offer retail customer visits, but the workshop tour is documented in photographs at Inside Our Agarwood Factory.

Is Guanzhu agarwood more expensive than other origins?

Generally yes, for two reasons: (1) the strict grading standards and multi-generational craft, and (2) the provenance value of documented Guanzhu origin. See Agarwood Price per Gram in 2026 for the current price ranges.
